NEC America, Microwave Radio Division - Remote Monitoring System (21GTX)

System Engineer - Technical Accomplishments

  • SUN Microsystems SPARC 2 based, graphical user interface remote monitoring system, used to monitor NEC radios as well as any other system capable of providing alarm inputs and control outputs (similar to SCADA systems).

  • My duties included populating the SQL database using CSV formatted files.  I was trained on how to manually create the CSV files.  I taught myself Shell Scripting Language and created a program to collect simple inputs and then automatically construct the CSV statements to be used to import specific site information into the SQL database that was used by the SUN based GUI to configure the remote devices and the GUI engine.  I also created graphics per customer specifications.  For example, from meeting with a customer, I would gather alarm point information such as: CEV or Shelter alarms and controls such as generator, environment, open door, etc.  I would then create the alarms, graphics, parent/child screens, summarizing alarms (using AND/OR/NOR/NAND type logic).  I would install the system master and remote hardware, configure the SUN Microsystem hardware, install it in the customer NOC and get customer sign-off to complete the project.

  • This was my first year out of school and although I was originally hired as a contractor, NEC bought out my contract and hired me as a full-time employee.  I taught myself UNIX, SQL and shell programming by reading technical books.  I studied the product engineering documents to become an expert with the hardware and software systems.

  • Provided technical input and document review for system and training manuals.

  • SUN Microsystems System Administrator - In order to be a Value Added Reseller, we had to have several engineers qualified as System Administrators.
